Life Happens is committed to supporting the Black community and opposing all forms of racism and injustice. We’ve spent the last few weeks considering our company, our goals as a nonprofit educational institution, and our place in the larger sector we serve. We acknowledge that Black lives matter and that we have a voice and a duty to contribute to the solution.

Because we understand that financial empowerment and education are crucial for equality, our nonprofit organization strives to offer equitable access to crucial financial information and educational tools. We do, however, admit that access to such information is not always equitable and that Black financial empowerment may be improved. Change is necessary now. For a long-term transformation that emphasizes diversity and equality both inside our own walls and as an industry, we can and must do better to listen, learn, and act.

These are our pledges to start bringing about change. We understand that this is just the start. And we’ll keep adding to this list:

By providing Black young adults with scholarships, we can broaden the scope of our Life Lessons Scholarship Program and help them get the education they deserve after losing their parents and having little or no life insurance. The first thing we’re going to do is give Mya Mercer a Life Lessons Scholarship so she may follow her ambition of going to college. Follow her story.

To expand the tools and information we give on essential protection goods and financial guidance, create a diverse advisory board that includes Black insurance and financial experts. You can join this advisory group by sending an email to mleyes (at) lifehappens.org if you’re interested.

To ensure that more people hear about the knowledge and experience of Black financial leaders and Black-owned financial and insurance organizations, raise their voices. Life Happens will organize speaking panels this year with the goal of improving the industry’s dialogue on financial inclusion and promoting equity for the Black community.

Ensure that there is more Black representation on Life Happens’ team and board of directors. Change is necessary now. Now is the moment to improve.
